2. Using a 110-volt test lamp, place one lead on
the connector strap and the other on the field frame
(Fig, 6 E - 5 ) . Disconnect the shunt coils ground before
check is made.
If lamp lights, the field coils are
grounded and defective
coils must be repaired or
replaced.
3. Using a 110-volt test lamp, place one lead on
each end of shunt coils (Fig. 6 E - 6 ) . Disconnect shunt
coil grounds before check is made. If lamp does not
light, the shunt coil is open and must be replaced.

Field coils can be removed from the field frame
easily by use of a pole shoe screwdriver. A pole
shoe spreader should also be used since this pre
vents distortion of the field frame. Careful installa
tion of field coils is necessary to prevent shorting or
grounding of field coils as the pole shoes are tight-
