Troubleshooting
Causes and remedies for general engine trouble are listed as follows.
SYMPTOMS & PROBABLE CAUSE
Hard Starting
(1) Slow cranking
(a) Viscosity of engine oil
high
(b) Battery discharged
(c) Battery is old
(d) Poor connection of
battery terminal
(e) Faulty starter
(f) Faulty starter Bendix
drive
(2) Injection system trouble
(a) Air in fuel system
(b) Fuel filter clogged
(c) Injector pressure low
(d) Nozzle injection failure
(e) Lack of pressure from
injection pump
(f) Injection timing too
early
(3) Engine
(a) Lack of compression
1) Improper valve
clearance
2) Incorrect contact of
valve seat
3) Seizure of valve stem
4) Valve spring broken
5) Leakage from cylinder
head gasket
6) Piston ring sticking
7) Worn piston rings and
cylinder
(b) Glow plug burned
(c) Insufficient operating
time for glow plug
(d) Incorrect setting of
throttle lever
(e) Governor spring out of
position
REMEDY
Use oil of lower viscosity
Charge battery
Replace battery
Clean terminals and cable connectors
Overhaul or replace starter
Check starter amperage draw. Replace
or repair starter if necessary
Allow system to self bleed
Replace fuel filter element
Adjust injector pressure
Clean or replace nozzle
Overhaul or replace injection pump
Check and adjust injection timing
propulsion 25· B.T.D.C.
Generator
25· B.T.D.C.
Adjust valve clearance
Lap valves to head
Replace valve and valve guide
Replace valve spring
Replace gasket
Replace piston and piston ring
Repair as needed
Replace glow plug
Adjust time per temperature. Check
connections and solenoid
Set to starting position full open
Correct spring
