Troubleshooting by Symptom

Trouble symptom
White exhaust smoke in cold weather.
Air heater does not work
well. See Air Heater on
page 13-81.
Improper fuel.
Faulty fuel injection nozzle.

Causes
The battery voltage is low
(battery discharge).
The battery voltage is low
(faulty charging).
Loose or faulty connection
on the air heater terminal.
Loose or faulty connection
on the air heater relay
terminal.
Faulty air heater.
Faulty air heater relay.
Fuse burned out.
(Air heater A or B: 250A)
Coolant temperature sensor
error (P0115) is detected.
Low cetane number.
Excessive aromatics in the
fuel.
Faulty valve and / or seat.
Sticking needle valve.
Wear of seat.
Clogged fuel injection
hole(s).
Decrease in fuel opening
pressure.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Corrective action
Check the electrolyte level
and the specific gravity.
Charge the battery or
replace.
Check the electric circuit.
Check the alternator and
battery terminals.
Check the V-belt tension.
Check the alternator
operation.
Check around the terminal
and repair if necessary.
Check around the terminal
and repair if necessary.
Disassemble and check.
Replace if necessary.
Check the relay with a YDT
and tester. Replace if
necessary.
Replace.
Replace the fuel.
Replace the fuel.
Check the fuel spray
condition with a tester. If a
malfunction is found, send it
to the FIE shop for service or
