Removing the Oil Pump

1. Drain the engine oil while the engine is still
warm. WARNING! If the engine oil must be
drained while it is still hot, stay clear of the
hot engine oil to avoid being burned.
ALWAYS wear eye protection.
2. Remove the oil pan and spacer.
3. Remove the oil inlet and outlet tubes.
4. Remove the oil pump.
5. Dispose of used engine oil properly. NOTICE:
ALWAYS be environmentally responsible.

Inspecting the Oil Pump

1. Remove the oil pump cover.
2. Measure the oil pump gear to oil pump body
clearance.
NOTICE: If the measured value exceeds the
service limit, or if there is local wear, replace the
oil pump assembly.

3. Measure the oil pump gear-to-pump body
clearance.

4. Measure the oil pump gear-to-pump cover
clearance with straight edge and gauge
(Figure 8-5).

NOTICE:
1. The oil pump should be disassembled only
when oil pressure is insufficient even after
adjusting the oil pressure regulator valve.
2. When assembling, make sure the oil pump
gears rotate smoothly.

Installing the Oil Pump

1. Install the oil pump on the main bearing cap.
2. Make sure the surface of the oil pump drive
gear and the surface of the idler gear are flush.
Tighten the pump bolts temporarily.
3. Rotate the crankshaft so the engagement of the
teeth is parallel.
4. Tighten the pump bolts.
5. Check the backlash of the drive gear.

0.08-0.26 mm (0.0032-0.01 in.)
6. Use new O-rings and attach the oil inlet and
outlet tubes.
7. Install the oil pan. See Installing the Oil Pan on
page 5-61.
8. Install all drain plugs.
9. Fill with the recommended engine oil to the
upper level.
