4.3.2 The PCL Barcode translator

The HP-PCL data stream allows the creation of specific BarCodes via PCL escape se-
quences. This support can only be used with a limited range of desktop printers; mostly HP
printers that require costly hardware modules called DIMM's for interpretation of the bar-
codes escape sequences.
The PRISMAspool PCL BarCode translation component removes the requirement for any
hardware upgrades by converting the Barcode PCL escape sequences to standard PCL bit-
maps that can be printed on any PCL printer, including the Océ high-speed printers. The
conversion runs as an automatic background task, and the updated print files are placed in
the standard Spool.
4.3.2.1 Installation and activation
To install the Barcode Support plug in you have to select the "PCL Barcode Translation"
check box in the "Select Components" dialog box during the PRISMAspool installation.
If the PCL Barcode translation component is installed at the same time as the PRIS-
MAspool server, the PCL Barcode plug-in is defined and activated (name 1) in the IF_PRE
plug-ins configuration.
If the PCL Barcode translation component is not installed at the same time as the PRIS-
MAspool server, the PCL Barcode plug-in is defined but not activated (name 101) in the
IF_PRE plug-ins configuration.
The PCL Barcode translation component can be installed after the PRISMAspool server
(via "modify" option in Windows Add/Remove programs) but nothing is modified in the plug-
ins configuration in the registry and the PCL Barcode plug-in has to be activated by modi-
fying the IF_PRE plug-ins configuration in the registry (via renaming of string values) as ex-
plained before.
Even if active, the PCL BarCode translation plug-in will be executed only if the dedicated
license (SPOOL_BARCODE_PCL 4.0) is valid on your PRISMAspool server.
You can support of a Data Matrix barcode on a 300 DPI printer by setting the following reg-
istry keys :
