This section outlines examples of E1- and T1-carrier lines that use PPP, Frame
Relay, and HDLC as the Data Link Layer protocol. It also provides examples
of WANs that are using PPP authentication.
Example 1. Figure 6-9 shows a company's WAN that includes a connection
between two offices in London. Because this company needed a constant,
reliable connection between these two offices, they leased an E1-carrier line
for both the Seething Lane and Chelsea Harbor offices. The Data Link Layer
protocol is PPP.
The company also required a connection to its Paris office. For this connec-
tion, the company negotiated an SLA with a Frame Relay service provider.
Finally, the company set up an Asymmetric Digital Subscriber (ADSL) line to
a local Internet Service Provider (ISP). Through this connection, the com-
pany's employees can access the Internet. (For information about ADSL, see
Chapter 7: ADSL WAN Connections.)
