Emergency tensioning device, seat belt force limiter
The seat belts for the front and rear seats in this vehicle are equipped
with emergency tensioning devices (also called "pretensioners") and
force limiters.
The pretensioners are pyrotechnic devices which, if activated, keep the
belt properly fitted across the occupant's body.
2
A seat belt pretensioner will be activated by the airbag control unit if,
in a head-on collision, the impact severity exceeds a preset limit and the
belt is deformed.
The pretensioners are activated based on the seat belt status, not on the
occupant's presence.
If a seat belt is not latched, the pretensioner for that seat will not be activated
even if the occupant is seated in that position.
The seat belt retractor is equipped with a force limiter device, that is
designed to reduce the force that the seat belts exert on the occupant's
body in the event of a crash. This device controls the level of force with
which the belt is released during a collision.
The pretensioners (emergency tensioning devices) can be used once only.
If a pretensioner of a seat belt has been activated, this belt must be replaced.

Maintenance of the seat belts and pretensioners
• Following a collision of a certain severity, replace the seat belts that
were worn at the time even if they may not appear to be damaged.
• Periodically check that the anchoring screws are still fully tightened
and that the seat belt is intact and slides in and out without jamming.
• The belt must be kept clean; any dirt on the belt could jeopardise the
efficiency of the seat belt retractor.
• To clean the seat belt, wash it by hand with mild soap and water and
let it dry. Do not use strong detergents, bleach or aggressive solvents,
as they can weaken the fibres.
Make sure the retractors do not get wet: they will operate properly only
if they do not undergo water infiltration.
• The pretensioner requires no maintenance or lubrication. If immersed
in water or mud, the pre-tensioner must be replaced.
The pretensioner must be replaced at the intervals indicated in the "Warranty
Booklet and Maintenance Schedule".
All work on any part of the safety system components
must be carried out by the F
Disassembly or any type of modification of the seat belts, retractor units and/
or pretensioners is strictly forbidden.
Special maintenance work involving strong impact, vibrations or heating up
of the pretensioner area may activate it; vibrations caused by road bumps will
not have this effect.
