Privileged access should be password protected to prevent unauthorized use,
because many of the privileged commands set operating parameters.
You enter privileged EXEC mode by entering the enable command at the user
EXEC mode prompt. If the enable secret password was set and saved in memory,
the system prompts you to enter the enable secret password. The password is not
displayed on the screen and is case sensitive. When the system accepts the
password, it changes the prompt to the privileged EXEC mode prompt, which
consists of the assigned router host name followed by the pound sign (#). The
following example shows the change from user EXEC mode to privileged EXEC
mode on the router named Router.

For information about using passwords, see

3-60.
Global configuration commands apply to features that affect the system as a
whole, rather than just one protocol or interface. You use the configure terminal
privileged EXEC command to enter global configuration mode. Commands to
enable a particular routing or bridging function are global configuration
commands.
Many features are enabled on a per-interface basis. Interface configuration
commands modify the operation of an interface such as Ethernet, FDDI, or serial
port. Interface configuration commands always follow an interface global
configuration command, which defines the interface type.
For details on interface configuration commands that affect general interface
parameters, such as bandwidth, clock rate, and so on, see the "Interface
Commands" chapter in the Configuration Fundamentals Command Reference.
For protocol-specific commands, see the appropriate Cisco IOS software
command reference.
