OIL DRAIN
FIG.6
Before removing the fork legs from the steering crown and the steering head,
loosen the upper plug (48) of each slider (7) with the 19-mm wrench. Remove
the fork legs from the motorcycle.
Fully unscrew the plug (48) and lower the slider (7) down the stanchion (5-6)
slowly.
FIG.7
Compress the spring (21) until the check nut (23) can be reached.
Keep firmly the plug (48) with the wrench previously used and then loosen the
check nut (23) with the other 19-mm wrench.
Remove the plug (48) from the damper rod.
FIG. 8
Pull out the retaining cup (20), the spring (21) and the pre-load sleeve (25).
Pull out the inner push-rod (31) from the damper rod (32).
FIG. 9
Let the oil come out of the leg. For an improved drainage from the inner
damper, pump several times with the rod.
IMPORTANT: put the leg into a container so that the pressurized oil does not hit
the operator or other people nearby. Recycle the exhausted oil in compliance
with current laws.
Operating conditions of the seals and guiding elements can be assessed by
examining the exhausted oil features, its density and quantity. If the oil is dense
and dark and contains foreign bodies, the pilot bushing must be changed. If the
oil has a regular density but the quantity, which has come out of the leg, is
remarkably under the indicated one, change the oil seals.
IMPORTANT: never use inflammable or corrosive solvents for cleaning, they
might damage the oil seals. If necessary, use a non-inflammable solvent, or
with a high flash point. Blow compressed air into the leg to fully remove the
solvent.
