Fault-tracing

A number of symptoms and possible reasons for engine problems are described in the table below. In case of
faults or mishaps which you cannot solve, always contact the Volvo Penta dealership.

Symptoms and possible causes
Engine cannot be stopped
Starter motor not turning or slow
Engine will not start
Engine starts but stops again
Engine difficult to start
Engine does not reach correct speed at wide open throttle (WOT)
Engine knocks
Engine runs unevenly
Engine vibrates
High fuel consumption
Black exhaust smoke
Blue or white exhaust smoke
Low oil pressure
Engine coolant temperature too high
No or poor charging
1. Discharged battery
2. Loose connection/open-circuit
3. Ground protection fuse or one of the semi-automatic fuses in the
terminal box has blown/been triggered
4. Preheating insufficient
5. Lack of fuel
6. Blocked fuel filter/supply pump
7. Air in the fuel injection system
8. Water/contaminants in the fuel
9. Boat abnormally loaded
10. Fouling on underwater hull/drive/propeller
11. Limited speed control lever movement
12. The boost pressure control (BPC) valve sticks (TMD, TAMD)
13. Insufficient air supply
