Seawater system. Cleaning and
inhibiting
To prevent the build up of deposits and salt crystals
in the seawater system it must be flushed with
freshwater. When the boat is laid up it must also be
inhibited.
WARNING! There is a risk of water penetration.
Cleaning and inhibiting the seawater system
should be carried out with the boat on land.
1. Open the seacock (not standard with SX-drive).
2. S-drive/Reverse gear: Disconnect the hose (1) at
the bottom cock and insert the free end in a
container of fresh water.
SX-drive: Detach the hose from the seawater filter
(2) at the seawater pump inlet side. Connect a
hose (3) to the pump and insert the free end in a
container of fresh water.
3. Refill the container and ensure that there is not a
risk of some shut in behind the exhaust outlet.
IMPORTANT! The impeller will be damaged if
it runs dry.
4. Set the gear control lever in the neutral position.
Check that nobody is near the propellers. Start the
engine. Let it run at idle a few minutes. Stop the
engine.
WARNING! Approaching or working on a
running engine is dangerous. Watch out for
rotating components and hot surfaces.
5. Empty and clean the seawater filter if installed
according to the description on the next page.
The seawater system is now cleaned. Continue
with points 6-8 to preserve it.
6. Fill container with an antifreeze mixture of 50%
Volvo Penta glycol and 50% freshwater.
7. Collect mixture from system in a suitable
container.
8. Start the engine and let it idle. Stop the engine just
before the mixture is finished.
The antifreeze mixture should be left in the system
while the boat is laid up. Drain the mixture just before
the boat is launched. Reuse the antifreeze mixture
next season or deposit it at a properly designated
disposal site.
