Figure 32-2 GDPS integrates many components
The GDPS family of System z Business Continuity solutions consists of two major offering
categories, and each category has several subofferings. Each GDPS solution is delivered
through IBM Global Services, and is specifically tailored to fit a specific set of client recovery
needs, budgetary requirements, physical distance and infrastructure, and other factors.
The three major categories of GDPS solutions are:
GDPS/PPRC solutions, based on Metro Mirror. Metro Mirror was formerly known as
Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy (PPRC).
GDPS/XRC solutions, based on z/OS Global Mirror. z/OS Global Mirror was formerly
known as Extended Remote Copy (XRC).
GDPS/GM (Global Mirror) solutions, based on Global Mirror.
The subofferings within these three GDPS major categories include the following:
GDPS/PPRC
– GDPS/PPRC, a Tier 7 solution
– GDPS/PPRC HyperSwap Manager, a Tier 6 solution
– RCMF/PPRC, a remote copy management solution for PPRC
GDPS/XRC
– GDPS/XRC, a Tier 7 solution
– RCMF/XRC, a remote copy management solution for XRC
Certain of the above GDPS offerings can also be combined into 3-site GDPS solutions,
providing Tier 7 recoverability in a multi-site environment.

32.1.1 GDPS/PPRC overview

GDPS/PPRC is designed to manage and protect IT services by handling planned and
unplanned exception conditions, and maintain data integrity across multiple volumes and
storage subsystems. By managing both planned and unplanned exception conditions,
GDPS/PPRC can help to maximize application availability and provide business continuity.
GDPS/PPRC is capable of the following attributes:
Near continuous availability solution
Tier 7, Tier 6 integrated solutions
Site A
zSeries
VTS
High bandwidth connections
Primary
Automation via GDPS
Peer to Peer VTS
