This chapter contains an overview of the IBM Ethernet Switch B24C, B48C, and
B50C models.
The term c-series is used to distinguish these Ethernet switch models from other
IBM Ethernet and IP router and switch.
These products will be referred to in the remainder of this publication by specific
model when necessary to distinguish between model features and by the generic
terms Ethernet switch or simply switch and switches whenever possible.
This guide includes procedures for installing the hardware and configuring
essential, basic parameters such as permanent passwords and IP addresses. The
basic software configuration procedures show how to perform tasks using the CLI.
The IBM c-series Ethernet switches are available in the following models:
v IBM Ethernet Switch B24C (Copper) (4002-C2A / 4002AC2) - 1U with
twenty-four 10/100/1000 MbE RJ45 ports including four combination 100/1000
MbE SFP ports and one module slot for optional 2-port 10 GbE XFP module
v IBM Ethernet Switch B24C (Fiber) (4002-C2B / 4002BC2) - 1U with twenty-four
100/1000 MbE SFP ports including four combination 10/100/1000 MbE RJ45
ports and one module slot for optional 2-port 10 GbE XFP module
v IBM Ethernet Switch B48C (Copper) (4002-C4A / 4002AC4) - 1U with forty-eight
10/100/1000 MbE RJ45 ports including four combination 100/1000 MbE SFP
ports
v IBM Ethernet Switch B48C (Fiber) (4002-C4B / 4002BC4) - 1U with forty-eight
100/1000 MbE SFP ports
v IBM Ethernet Switch B50C (Copper) (4002-C5A / 4002AC5) - 1U with forty-eight
10/100/1000 MbE RJ45 ports plus two 10 GbE XFP ports
v IBM Ethernet Switch B50C (Fiber) (4002-C5B / 4002BC5) - 1U with forty-eight
100/1000 MbE SFP ports plus two 10 GbE XFP ports
The IBM c-series Ethernet switches are compact 1 RU, multi-service
edge/aggregation devices with a powerful set of capabilities that combine
performance with rich functionality at the network edge. These switches offer
network planners a broad set of high performance IPv4, Classic Layer 2, Provider
Bridge (PB) and Provider Backbone Bridge (PBB) functionalities in the same device.
With these capabilities, the switches address a diverse set of applications in metro
edge networks, ISP networks, mobile backhaul networks, data centers, large
enterprises, government networks and education/research.
