Chapter 5. Solving problems

This section provides basic troubleshooting information to help you solve some
common problems that might occur while you are setting up the server.
If you cannot locate and correct the problem using the information in this chapter,
see Appendix A, "Getting help and technical assistance," on page 59, the Problem
Determination and Service Guide on the IBM xSeries Documentation CD, and the
"Server Support" flowchart inside the front cover of this document.

Diagnostic tools overview

The following tools are available to help you diagnose and solve hardware-related
problems:
v POST beep codes
v ServerGuide problems
v Troubleshooting tables
v Diagnostic programs and error messages
v System-board error LEDs

The power-on self-test (POST) codes indicate the detection of a problem.
– One beep indicates successful completion of POST, with no errors.
– More than one beep indicates that POST detected a problem. Error messages
also appear during startup if POST detects a hardware-configuration problem.
See"POST beep codes" in the Problem Determination and Service Guide on
the IBM xSeries Documentation CD for more information.
This table lists problem symptoms and steps to correct problems that occur when
you are using the ServerGuide Setup and Installation CD. See the "ServerGuide
problems" on page 46 for information.
These tables list problem symptoms and steps to correct the problems. See
"Troubleshooting tables" on page 47 for more information.
The system diagnostic programs are provided the IBM Enhanced Diagnostics
CD. These programs test the major components of the server. See "POST beep
codes" on page 40 and the Problem Determination and Service Guide on the
IBM xSeries Documentation CD for more information.
A LED on the system board might also be lit to help isolate an error that is
indicated by the system error LED on the front of the server. See "System-board
error LEDs" on page 57 for more information.
