2.1.4 What is a Storage Complex?

A Storage Complex can be one or two DS8000 Storage Units managed by one or two DS
HMCs. A Storage Complex could also be one or two DS6000 Storage Units, managed by one
or two DS SMCs. In Figure 2-1, you see a logical view of two Storage Complexes, each with
one DS6000 Storage Unit. They are running Remote Mirror and Copy. Now, because the two
DS SMCs are linked by Ethernet, you could use the DS GUI to connect to either DS SMC and
manage Copy Services on both DS6000s.
Figure 2-1 Logical view of a Storage Complex
Currently, for the DS8000 and DS6000, you can manage two Storage Units in one Storage
Complex. For ESS 800, you can manage up to eight ESS 800s in a single ESS Copy
Services domain.
Note: Only servers of the same type, like 2107, can be in the same Storage Complex.
However, Storage Complexes with different server types can be joined together. For
example, a DS8000 Storage Complex and a DS6000 Storage Complex can be connected.
