3. Using a valve spring compressor and special
adapter to compress the valve springs, remove
the valve cotters (1) from the valve stems.
NOTE: Keep valve, tappets, springs, and cotters
together and note the location from which they
came on the cylinder head.
4. Remove the valve spring retainer (2) and the
valve spring (3); then remove the valve (4).

5. Remove the oil seal with a needle-nose pliers;
then remove the valve spring seat.
6. Check the gasket surface of the cylinder head
for distortion using a straightedge and feeler
gauge. Take clearance readings at several
places. If any clearance reading exceeds the ser-
vice limit specifications, replace the cylinder
head with a new one.
Measuring Valve Stem Runout
1. Support each valve stem end with the V Blocks
(p/n 0644-022); then check the valve stem
runout using a dial indicator.
