Setting Network Address & Loop and Unit Numbers
Description
Before You Begin
Important Definitions
2000590-001
This section provides instructions to configure an Advance Network
Gateway (ANG_EN) with its own Network Address.
1. Open Windows Hyper Terminal program on your PC; reference Con-
figuring Your PC, page 26.
2. Connect and Log on to ANG_EN; reference Establishing a Con-
nection, page 26.
Familiarize yourself with the following definitions.
address ip:
This is the 12-digit address that defines each
ANG_EN's network ID and host ID. The IP ad-
dress must be assigned before the ANG_EN is
placed on-line to the network. Typically the cus-
tomer's network administrator assigns this ad-
dress. The address ip is entered in dotted decimal
notation. Ex: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
subnetmask:
Subnetting, dividing the host ID into a subnet and
host ID, helps hide the details of an internal net-
work organization to external routers. The sub-
netmask is used to reduce the size of routing ta-
bles and restrict broadcast messages to the sub-
network. The subnetmask is a 32-bit value con-
taining one bits for the network and subnet ID and
zero bits for the host ID. Typically the same sub-
net mask is used on all ANG_EN's on a given
network. Ex: 255.255.000.000.
address ethernet:
This is the 48-bit unique Ethernet address. This
address is assigned at manufacturing time and is
not user configurable.
loop:
Loop refers to the Advance Data Hiway (ADH)
Loop number. Each ANG must be assigned a
Loop number. All ADH units physically connected
to the same bus as the ANG must have the same
Loop number. Allowable Loop numbers range
from 1 - 8.
