Configuring the RAID Disk Array

NOTE
This section only applies to systems that contain the AMI MegaRAID controller.
This section describes the RAID hardware used in the system, explains the standard RAID
disk configuration, and provides guidelines to configure additional RAID drives. The
standard RAID hardware is pre-configured before shipment. The following information is
provided to help you understand how RAID is implemented, which should be valuable if you
need to configure additional RAID hardware.

Internal and External RAID Configurations

The basic RAID configuration for an InterServe 80 SL consists of a RAID controller cabled
to disk drives internal to the system. You can add external RAID cabinets by adding
additional RAID controllers and cabling the cabinets to these additional controllers. You
cannot connect an external RAID cabinet to the RAID controller cabled to the system's
internal disk drives.

Basic RAID Hardware Information

If your InterServe 80 SL comes with the RAID option, the system contains a RAID controller
(also known as adapter), three disk drives cabled to the controller, and RAID software. For
information on the AMI MegaRAID controller installed in an InterServe 80 SL with internal
RAID, and for information on the MegaRAID software, refer to the InterRAID
documentation delivered with the system.
The system has five drive bays available for disk drives, as shown in the following figure.
All five bays are available when 1.0-inch disk drives are used. If 1.6-inch disk drives are
used, then bay 2 is not available and you have a total of four devices.
