Section 2: Assembly
2. Insertnylon bushing(Z, Figure2-8)
up into console (L).
3. Slide spring and washers(J) down
onto gearselect lever.
4. Insertgearselectlever(I) up through
nylonbushing(Z) in handlebar console
(L).Guidepin (K) on gear selectleverinto
groovein shift quadrant(P).
5. Hold lower part of gear select lever
(I, Figure2-9) against bracket(M).
Position retainingplate (N), removed
earlier,as shown in Figure2-9 (plate
belowbracket). Secureplatewith two
1/4"-20x 1/2"screws (0) and 1/4"-20
Iocknutsremovedearlier.
6. Slide grip (B, Figure2-8) back onto
gear selectlever (I).
7. Rotategear selectlever (I, Figures2-
8 & 2-9) clockwise until spur (K - short
rod) on gear select rod stops in the neu-
tral position detent on the shift pattern
quadrant(Figure2-8).
8. Move shift arm (X, Figure2-9) from
sideto side as necessaryintoeach
transmissiongear detent until transmis-
sion is in neutral.
NOTE: M oving shift arm (X) all the way
to the left, and then one notch backto
the right, should put transmissioninto
neutral.Whentransmission isin neutral,
unitwill movefreely when pushedwhile
holdingthe OperatorPresence Control
lever(W, Figure2-7) down. If transmis-
sion is NOTin neutral,therewill be a
slight drag on the wheelswhen pushing
unit.
9. Whenshift arm (X) is in neutralposi-
tion, rotateshift link (P) toward end of
gear selectlever rod (I). Adjust length
of shift link (P) as necessary to fit into
hole in bottom of gear select lever(I).
NOTE: P in (K) on GearSelect Lever(I)
must be held in the neutral position
detent on the shift quadrant(see Figure
2-8) while shift link (P, Figure2-9) is
adjusted.
10. Insert hookedend of shift link (P,
Figure2-9) into hole in bottom end of
gear selectlever (I) and secure with
hairpin clip (Q).
NOTE:It may be necessaryto lift gear
select lever(I) to install shift link (P).
11. Removeunit from shipping crate.
To remove,hold down Operator
PresenceControl lever (W, Figure2-7)
which releasesthe wheelbrake.
12. With unit on levelground, hold
down OperatorPresenceControl lever
(W, Figure2-7) and pushunit forward
and backward.Thewheels should move
freely. If not, adjust lengthof shift link
(P, Figure2-9) as necessary.
Do not use the mower if the wheels
continue to turn after releasing the
Operator Presence Control end the
Wheel DriveControl.
Severe personal injury or property
damage could result if this instruction
is not followed.

13. Putthe GearSelectLeverin neutral
(N), releaseall of the control leversand
try to pushthe unit forward and back-
ward. The wheelsshould not turn. If
they do turn, an adjustment is neces-
sary. DONOTOPERATE THEUNIT
UNTILTHEWHEELBRAKEMECHANISM
HASBEENADJUSTED AND IS WORK-
ING PROPERLY.See"Wheel Brake
Adjustment"in Section 5 "Maintenance."
STEP5: Check Motor Oil Level
1. Move mower to a levelarea.Press
and hold OperatorPresenceControl
lever(W, Figure2-7) to move mower.
2. The mower is shippedwith oil in the
engine.However,you MUSTcheckthe
oil levelaccordingto the instructionspro-
videdin the separate EngineOwner's
Manualincludedin the unit's literature
packagebeforestartingthe mower.
• Keepoil levelat the FULLmark on the
dipstick to avoidengine damage.
• Changeoil accordingto scheduleand
instructionsin Section5 "Maintenance."
STEP6: Check Tire Pressure
1. Usea tire gaugeto checkthe air
pressurein the reartires. Theair pres-
sure should be between15-20 PSI(20
PSImaximum).
2. Keepboth tires equallyinflated to
help prevent machinefrom pulling to
one side.
STEP7: After Assembling and
Before Using Unit
1. Readthis entire Owner'sManualfor
proper safety,operationand mainte-
nanceinformation.
2. Makesure spark plug wire is con-
nectedto spark plug beforestarting unit.
