Operation
Before operating mower, be sure to
read all safety, controlsand operating
instructions in this Manual and on
decalslocatedonmachine.
Severe personal injury or property
damagecould result if this instruction
is notfollowed.
BEFOREOPERATING MOWER
1. Pre-Operation Checklist
With the spark plug wire disconnected
from the spark plug, perform the follow-
ing checksand servicesbeforeeach use:
1. ReviewSection 1: "Safety" and Section
3, "Featuresand Controls"in this man-
ual. Readthe separateEngineOwner's
Manualprovidedwith the unit.
2. Checkunit for looseor missing hard-
ware. Tighten or replaceas needed.
3. With the unit on levelground, check
the engine oil levelaccording to the
instructions in the EngineOwner's
Manual. Theoil levelshould be at the
FULLmark on the dipstick or up to the
top of the oil fill hole on engineswith-
out a dipstick.
4. Checkall leversfor freedom of move-
ment.Readjustor repairas needed
beforestarting engine.
5. Checkthat all guards and shields are
in placeand properly secured.
6. inspect t he area to mowed and re-
moveany debris which could be
pickedup and thrown bythe mower
blades.
7. Checkthat the mulcher cover is prop-
erly installed in the dischargeopening
(seeinstructions in this Section).
Removethe mulcher cover to usethe
side-dischargemowing feature.
8. On electricstart models,checkthat
all wiring connectionsare cleanand
tight.
9. Checkthe air pressurein the rear
tires (15-20 PSI). Keeptires inflated
equally.
GASOLINE IS HIGHLYFLAMMABLE A ND
ITS VAPORSARE EXPLOSIVE.TO help
preventseverepersonalinjuryor prop-
erty damage:
• Follow gasoline safety rules in
Section1: "Safety" of this Manual and
in the separate
Engine Owner's
Manual.
• Never removethe gasolinefill cap or
odd fuel when indoorsor when engine
is runningor still hot. Allow engine to
cool at least three (3) minutes before
refueling.
• Keep smoking materials, sparks or
flames far awayfrom fuel tank and fuel
container.
• Store gasoline in an approved fuel
containerand in a well-ventilatedarea.
Store it safely out of the reach of chil-
dren. Do not store gasolinewhere va-
porscon reach on openspark or flame
or where ignition sourcesore present
(such as hot water or space heaters,
furnaces, clothes dryers, stoves, elec-
tric motors,etc.).
• Fill tankto 1/2" below bottomof filler
neckto allow for fuel expansion.Wipe
up spilled gasoline immediately and
movemoweraway from gasolinefumes
before starting engine. Securely re-
place caps on fuel tank and fuel
container.
10. Removethe fuel capand checkthe
levelof gasolineaccordingto the in-
structions in the EngineOwner's
Manual. Cleanaround fuel fill area
beforeremoving fuel cap. Do not
checkfuel level or add fuel while in-
doors or if engineis running or hot.
Allow engineto cool for three (3)
minutes. Fillthe tank with fresh,

cleanunleadedgasolinewith a mini-
mum octane ratingof 77. Leave1/2"
of spacefor fuel expansion.Donot
mix oil with gasoline.Do not use
gasolinewhich contains Methanol.
Seethe EngineOwner's Manualfor
instructionsand precautionsregard-
ing the use of gasolinesthat are
blendedwith alcohols or ethers
(calledoxygenatedor reformulated
gasolines). Securelyreplacecaps on
fuel tank and fuel container.
Attach spark plug wire to spark plug
after completingabovechecklist.
2. Set Mower Cutting Height
To avoid personalinjury, do not adjust
cutting height while wheels or blades
are turning. Release all handlebar
controlsand wait for all motionto stop
beforeadjustingcuttingheight.
1. Release all controls beforeadjusting
the cutting height.
2. Adjust the cutting height from 1 to 4
inches by rotating the Cutting Height
Control lever(Figure3-4) either clock-
wise to raisethe heightor counterclock-
wise to lowerthe height. Notethat ac-
tual cutting heights will vary according
to grass and soil conditions. A decaland
pointeron the right side of the mower
deck indicatesthe heightsetting.
3. In heavyor tall grass, it is usually
betterto makethe first cut at a higher
setting and then makea secondcut at
the desired height. In rough terrain, a
highersetting is recommendedas it will
minimizethe chancesof the bladestrik-
ing the ground or hiddenobstructions.
