Section 4: Operation
4. To start engine using recoil starter:
A. Standon left side (as viewed from
behind handlebars)of machine.Be
sure your feet are safelyaway from
the undersideof the mower deck and
all mower controls are released.
Placeone foot on top of tire.
B. Graspstarter rope handle(Figure3-
7) and pull slowly until rope pulls
slightly harder. Let rope rewind
slowly. Then pull rope with a rapid,
full arm stroke. Let rope return
slowly. If enginefails to start after
three pulls, repeatinstructions start-
ing with Step 2 (try setting throttle at
fast setting).
C. Whenengine starts, operatein fast
throttle setting (move throttle from
choke setting to fast setting).
5. To start engine using electricstarter:
A. Standbehind the handlebarsand re-
leaseall mower controls.
B. Turn ignition key (F, Figure4-2) fully
clockwiseto crank engine. To avoid
damageto starter motor, do not
crank engine for longerthan five sec-
onds at a time. Also, allow 15 sec-
onds betweeneachstart attempt. If
enginefails to start after three at-
tempts, repeatinstructionsstarting
with Step2 (try setting throttle at fast
setting).
C. Whenenginestarts, releasekey and it
will returnto the run (middle) posi-
tion.
D. Operateengineat fast throttle setting
(movethrottle from choke setting to
fast setting).
NOTE:If the electric start system is not
functioning, the enginecan be started
with the recoil starter. To do so, first put
the ignition key in the run (middle) posi-
tion. Then follow Steps 1-4 above.
Leavethe key in the run position during
engine operation.
To Stop the Engine
1. Release all mower controls to stop
wheels or mower blade.
2. Move throttle control down to slow
(turtle) position. (Wheneverpossible,
graduallyreduceenginespeed before
stopping engine.)
3. MoveThrottle Controlall the way
down to stop position or turn ignition
key (electric start models)fully counter-
clockwiseto stop position.
4. Onelectric start models, removethe
ignition key beforeleavingthe mower
unattended.
ENGAGING THE BLADES
To ovoid injury from rotating blades,
keep face, hands and feet clear of
mowerbladesat all times.
To Engage the Blades
1. Start engineas described in "To Start
the Engine"instructions. Put engine
throttle in fast speedsetting.
2. Press and hold OperatorPresence
Control (A, Figure4-2) against handle-
bar grip.
3. Slowly push BladeDrive Control (B,
Figure4-2) fully forward until it stays in
the engagedposition. The bladesare
now rotating.
To Stop the Blades
To stop the blades,releasethe Operator
PresenceControl.
TO ENGAGE THE WHEELS
• To avoiddamagingthe transmission,
do notshift gearswhile in motion.
• To avoid damagingthe wheel brake
mechanism,do not engagethe Wheel
Drive Control w ithoutfirst engagingthe
OperatorPresence Control.
1. Start engineas describedin "To
Start the Engine"instructions.
2. FORFORWARD TRAVEL:
A. Pressand hold OperatorPresence
Control (A, Figure4-2) against han-
dlebar grip.
B. Putthe GearSelect Lever(C, Figure
4-2) into one of the numberedset-
tings (1 - Slow, 2 and 3 - Medium,4
- Fast). Whenfirst practicingwith
the mower, put lever in No. 1 setting.
Selectforward speedsaccording to
mowing conditionsand terrain. Use
slower speedson rough terrain or
when grass is heavyor thick. The
forward speedcan be increasedon
smooth terrain or if the grass cover
is light. Allow the wheels to stop
completelybefore shifting from one
forward speedinto another.
Beforeengagingthe Wheel DriveLever
for the very first time, check that the
neutral (N) positionon the GearSelect
Lever is properly adjusted.

follow.
Failure to follow this instructioncould
result in personal injury or property
damage.
C. To start the wheels,slowly squeeze
the WheelDrive Control (D, Figure4-
2). The harderyou squeeze,the
fasterthe wheelswill turn. To avoid
suddenacceleration,slowly squeeze
the lever.
O.TO STOPTHEWHEELS:
• To stop drivepowerto the wheels,
release the WheelDriveControl. The
wheelswill graduallyslow to a stop.
• To quicklystop the wheels, release
boththeWheelDrive Control and
the OperatorPresenceControl.
3. FORREVERSE TRAVEL:
To avoidinjuryor propertydamage:
• Look behind the mower before
and duringreverseoperation.
• Stopthe mower bladesbeforeoperat-
ing in reverse.
A. Stop the mower bladesand wheels by
releasingthe OperatorPresence
Control (A, Figure4-2).
B. Pressand hold OperatorPresence
Control against handlebargrip.
