WHEEL DRIVE BELT
REPLACEMENT
Followthis procedureto replacethe
wheeldrive belt.
1. Stopengine, waitfor all parts to
stopmoving,and disconnect s park
plug wire.
2. Release all mower controls.
3. Removebelt cover as described in
"Belt CoverRemoval"instructions.
4. Locatewheeldrive belt (0, Figure5-
11) and removeit from top sheaveof
engine sheave,backsidedidlers (P and
Q) and transmissionsheave(R).
5. Install new belt as shown in Figure5-
11. Belt must be installed "inside out "-
"V" side of belt liesagainst
engine sheaveonly. Flatside of belt lies
againsttransmission sheave(R) and
back-sidedidlers (P and Q).
6. Makesure belt is inside belt guide (S,
Figure5-11).
7. Reinstallbelt cover securely.
8. An adjustmentto the drive belt may
be necessary.See"Wheel Drive Belt
Adjustment" in this Section.
WHEEL DRIVE BELT
ADJUSTMENT
Thewheel drive belt requiresan adjust-
ment if loss of drive belt tension (slip-
page)occurs. This is most noticeable
when moretraction is required (such as
going up slopes).
To TestWheelTraction:
1. Parkmachineon a paved(concrete,
etc.) surfacewith front edge up against
a sturdy wall, fence,etc.
2. Put GearSelectLever in No. 1 setting.
IMPORTANT: D O NOTPARKAGAINSTA
PAINTED ORSIDEDWALL. TESTING
THEWHEELDRIVESYSTEMREQUIRES
MACHINE TO BE FORCIBLY PUSHED
AGAINSTWALL. DAMAGE TO PAINTOR
SIDINGCOULDRESULT.
3, With engine running, and machine
placedfirmly up against wall, hold down
OperatorPresenceControland fully en-

Drive Control until it contacts handlebar.
4. Wheelsshould slip on pavedsurface.
If they do not, an adjustment is required.
To Adjust WheelDrive Belt:
1. Stop engine,wait for all parts to
stopmoving,and disconnect s park
plug wire.
2. Removecotter pin (A, Figure5-12A)
from upper end of Wheel Drive Control
rod. Slide rod out of lever assembly.
3. Loosenjam nut (D, Figure5-12).
4. Threadrod (E, Figure5-12) one or
two turns clockwisefor moretension or
counterclockwisefor less tension.
5. Insert rod back into hole in Wheel
Drive Control leverand install cotter pin.
Bendends of cotter pin to secure.
6. Retestwheeltraction. Repeatadjust-
ment procedure,if necessary.Most
comfortableoperationwill be obtained
whenthe adjustment allows the leverto
just makecontact with the handgrip as
sufficient wheeltraction is achieved.
Whenadjustment is complete, tighten
jam nut (D) firmly against block (B).

WHEEL BRAKEADJUSTMENT
This adjustment may be requiredif the
machinedoes not hold on a hill with the
OperatorPresenceControl disengaged,
or if the brakedrags with the Operator
PresenceControl engagedand the trans-
mission in neutral.
1. Stopengine, waitfor all parts to
stopmoving,and disconnect s park
plug wire.
2. Disengage(release)the Operator
PresenceControl (M, Figure5-13).
