3. Test Blade-Brake-Clutch
Central System
The mower isequippedwith a blade-
brake-clutchwhich is designedto stop
the mower bladeswithin three (3)
secondsafter releaseof the Operator
Presence Control or the BladeDrive
Control. Nevertamper with, or attempt
to defeatthe purposeof this safety
device.
The control system is a mechanical
device which is subject to wear.
Therefore,test the operationof the
blade-brake-clutch control system before
each useof the mower. Referto "Blade
BrakeControl Test"at the end of this
Section.
4. Select Mulching or Side-
Discharge Mowing
Beforeinstallingor removingmulching
cover, stop engine, wait for parts to
stop moving,and disconnect s park plug
wire. Remove ignition key on electric
startmodels.
You can usethe mower either as a
mulching mower or asa side-discharge
mower. To usethe mulching feature,in-
sert the mulcher coveras described
below. Removethe mulcher coverto
side-dischargegrass clippings. The
mulcher cover is designedto keepthe
discharge chute raisedup while mowing.
Whenthe cover is removed,the dis-
chargechute will lower itself for side-
discharge mowing.
To install or removemulcher cover:
1. Stop the engineand wait for all parts
to stop moving. Disconnectthe spark
plug wire from the spark plug. Remove
the ignition key on electric start models.
2. To install the cover, insert the right-
side tab of the cover into the front sup-
port bracket(A, Figure4-1). Insert the
cover into the discharge opening,mak-
ing sure that the slot (B) in the left side
of the cover is completely engagedin the
rear edgeof the deck opening.

STARTING ANDSTOPPING
THE ENGINE
Do not operate the engine in an
enclosed area.
Engine exhaust
contains carbon monoxide, a deadly
gas that is odorless, colorless and
tasteless. Alwaysrunengine outdoors
and make sure there is adequate
ventilation.
3. To removethe cover,slide the cover
to the right (front of mower) to disen-
gage the slot (B) from the mower deck
and then pry the left-sideof the cover
out and off.
MOVINGTHE MOWERWITHOUT
ENGINEPOWER
The mower canbe manuallypushed
or pulled by putting the GearSelect
Lever(C, Figure4-2) in N (neutral)and
pressing and holding the Operator
PresenceControl (A, Figure4-2) down
against the handlebargrip.
To stop the wheelsat anytime,
releasethe OperatorPresenceControl.
To Start the Engine
1. Move mower to a levelarea.
2. Release all controls on mower to pre-
vent wheels or mower bladesfrom rotat-
ing when enginestarts.
3. Move EngineThrottle Control (E,
Figure4-2) fully upwardto choke setting
to start a cold engine or to fast (rabbit)
setting to start a warm engine.
To avoidinjury:
• Keep handsand feet clear of mower
blades or other
rotating
parts.
• Lookbehindyou to be sure there are
no obstacles before pulling recoil
starterrope.
