BLADEBRAKEREPLACEMENT
Followthis procedureto install a new
bladebrake.
To RemoveBladeBrake:
1. Stopengine, waitfor all parts to
stopmoving,and disconnect s park
plug wire.
2. Removebelt cover as described in
"Belt CoverRemoval"instructions.
3. Removehardware(G, Figure5-8)
securing blade brake(H).
4. Removeold brake (H)from idler
arm (I).
To Install Brake:
1. Position new brake(H) in placeon
idler arm (I).
2. Centerbrakein sheavegroove and
secure brake(H) with hardware(G) re-
movedearlier.
3. Reinstallbelt cover securely.
4. Test operationof blade brake(see
"BladeBrakeControlTest" in Operation
section).
BLADEDRIVE BELT
ADJUSTMENT
If the bladedrive belt is slipping due to
lackof belttension, follow the steps
below.
1. Stopengine, waitfor all parts to
stopmoving,and disconnect s park
plug wire.
2. Removebelt cover as described in
"Belt CoverRemoval"instructions.
3. With mower on level ground,adjust
bladecutting heightat about 3" (mea-
sure from ground to flat portion of
blade).
4. With the BladeDrive Control (Figure
5-7) in the disengagedposition, set a
gap of 1/8" betweenthe spring (F, Figure
5-9) and flat washer (E) by adjusting the
nut (D).
5. Reinstallthe belt cover securely.

6. Testthe operationof the blade brake
(see"BladeBrakeControl Test" in the
Operationsection).
7. If the drive belt slips during opera-
tion, it may be necessaryto
relocateidler (J, Figure5-9) in the slot
provided in the mounting bracket. With
the enginestoppedand thesparkplug
wiredisconnected, l oosenthe hardware
on the idler (J) and slide it forward to
take up slack in the belt.
8. Engagethe bladedrive and measure
the distance(X, Figure5-8) betweenthe
centersof pulleys (K) and (L). Thedis-
tance should be 5-1/2 to 5-5/8". After
obtainingthe correct dimension,rein-
stall the belt cover securelyand test the
operationof the blade brake.
BLADE DRIVE CONTROLLEVER
ADJUSTMENT
Makethe following adjustment if the
BladeDrive Control Leverreleasesdur-
ing operation.
1. Stop engine,wait for all parts to
stopmoving,and disconnect s park
plug wire.
2. Engagethe OperatorPresence
Control and the Blade Drive Control.
Without releasingthe controls, look in-
sidethe cutout at the rear of the frame
and makesure the OperatorPresence
Control latches(A and B, Fig. 5-10) are
fully engagedat point (C). If they are not
fully engaged,improperoperation or
prematurewear could result. To adjust,
loosenhex nut (D) and shorten lengthof
control rod (E).To avoid over-adjusting,
turn rod only 1 to 2 turns per adjust-
ment.
3. Tighten hex nut securelyafter adjust-
ing control rod.
4. Test by releasingthe Operator
PresenceControl.If properlyadjusted,
the BladeDrive Control will disengage
when the OperatorPresenceControl is
released.Re-adjustas necessaryby
repeatingSteps2 and 3.
