MOWERSERVICE

stopmoving,and disconnect s park
plug wire.
2. Removefour screws (R, Figure5-5)
and removecover.
To ReinstallBeltCover:
1. Position belt cover in place.
2. Securewith thefour screws removed
earlier.
TIPPING MOWER FOR SERVICE
Before servicing underside of mower,
stop engine, wait for ell parts to stop
moving, end disconnect spark plug
wire.
Remove ignition key from
keyswitch on electric start models.
Failure to follow this instructioncould
result in personal injury or property
damage.
Whenservicingthe undersideof the
mower for any reason,the mower
should only be tipped backwardon its
rear wheels (and securelypropped up to
prevent it from failing). Tipping the
mower forward or to either side could
result in damageto engine.
TIP: Beforetipping mower, install a
small plasticsandwichstyle bag under
the gas capand tighten securely. This
will virtually eliminate anyfuel seepage
from the cap. Be sure to remove the
plastic bag before re-using mower.
BELTCOVER REMOVAL
Do not operate unit without belt cover
installed. Failureto followthis instruc-
tion could result in personalinjury or
propertydamage.

BLADESPINDLE BELT
6. Slide spindle housing (with pulley at-
tached)toward center.
7. Replacebelt (N) with new belt.
IMPORTANT:SETBLADESPERPEN-
DICULAR(90°) TO EACH OTHER.
8. Rotatearm (K) to move spindle
housingand apply tension to belt. Belt
cogs and pulley grooves must meshto-
gether. Whenapplying moderatefinger
tension (8-12 Ibs.), belt should deflect
approximately1/2" (12.7 mm) at (P),
midpoint of deck.
9. Tighten bolts (L) to 15 ft.-Ibs. (20.3
Nm).Tighten screw (J).
10. Bladesmust not contact deck.
Checkand readjustas needed.
11. Reinstallbladedrive belt and belt
cover (removedearlier).
REPLACEMENT
Followthis procedureto removeand re-
placethe bladespindle drive belt (re-
move bladedrive beltfirst; see "Blade
Drive Belt Replacement"in this Section).
1. Stopengine,wait for all parts to
stopmovingand disconnect s parkplug
wire.
2. Removebelt cover (see "Belt Cover
Removal").
3. Align sight holes (0, Figure5-6) in
pulleywith spindle housing-to-mower
deck mounting bolts (L).
4. Loosenscrew (J) and rotatearm (K)
to the rear.
