Section 3: Featuresand Controls
Operating Symbols Varioussymbols are usedon the mower to indicatecontrol settings (your model may not haveall of the
symbols). Thesesymbols are shown below with a descriptionof their meaning.

Gear Select Lever
Use this lever(C, Figure3-1) to select
anyof four forward ground speeds (1 -
Slow, 2 and 3 - Medium,4 - Fast), N
(Neutral) and R (Reverse).The gear shift
pattern is shown in Figure3-2.
To avoiddamagingthetransmis-
sion, do notshift gearswhenthe
moweris moving.
Forforward travel,use one of the four
numberedsettings.To select reverse,
shift to neutraland then pull up on the
lever.Turn the leverto the R (reverse)
position and releasethe lever.
Put the leverin N (neutral)to manu-
ally push the mower and whenthe
mower is not in use.

Wheel Drive Control
Use this lever(D, Figure3-3) to en-
gageand disengagedrive to the wheels.
To engagethe wheels,first selecta
forward or reversegear with the Gear
SelectLeverand squeezethe Operator
PresenceControl (A, Figure3-3). Then,
squeeze the Wheel Drive Control lever
(D) against the handlebargrip. The
ground speedcan be varied by increas-
ing or decreasingpressureon the lever.
To avoid suddenacceleration, slowly
squeezethe lever whenfirst engaging
the wheels.
Release the WheelDrive Control to
disengagethe wheels.The wheelswill
graduallyslow to a stop. NOTE:To stop
the wheelsquickly, releasethe Operator
PresenceControlalong with theWheel
Drive Control.
Whenstarting the engine,the Wheel
Drive Control should be disengaged(re-
leased). This helpsto ensurethat the
wheels will not start turning whenthe
engine starts.
Do not engagethe Wheel DriveControl
without first engaging the Operator
Presence Control.
Doing so could
result in wear or damageto the wheel
brakemechanism.

Cutting Height Control Lever
Usethis lever (E, Figure3-4) to adjust
the cutting heightfrom 1 to 4 inches.
Notethat actual cutting heights will vary
according to soil conditions.
Turn the lever clockwiseto raisethe
heightor counterclockwiseto lowerthe
height. A decaland pointer (not illus-
trated) on the right side of the mower
deck show the cutting heightsettings
ranging from A (highest) to G (lowest).

Mulcher Cover
The mulchercover (F, Figure3-5)is
pre-installedat the factory. It must be
kept in placewhen using the unit as a
mulching mower. The mulcher cover is
designedto keepthe dischargechute
raised up whileyou mow. Whenthe
cover is removedfor side-discharge
mowing, the discharge chute lowers.
