ENGINECLEANING
• Stopengine, waitfor parts tostep
moving,disconnect s parkplug wire,
andallow engineto coolbeforein-
spectingor cleaningengine.
• Dailyor more often, beforerunning en-
gine, removegrass and chafffrom recoil
finger guard or rotatingscreento prevent
enginedamagecausedby overheating.
Also keepcooling vanes,governorlink-
age,springs and controls free of debris.
• Daily or more often, beforerunning en-
gine, cleanmuffler area (be sure muffler
is cool) to removeall grass and com-
bustibledebris. If engineis equipped
with a spark arrestor screen, removeas-
sembly every50 hoursfor cleaningand
inspection.Replaceif damaged.
• Grassor chaff may clog engine'sair
cooling system, especiallyafter pro-
longedoperationcutting tall, dE/grass.

AIR CLEANERSERVICE
Improperair cleanermaintenancecan
causeengine damage.Referto the
EngineOwner's Manualfor more com-
pleteair cleanerservice information.
SERVICE SCHEDULE:
Outerfoam pre-cleaner- wash and re-oil
every 25 operatinghours or every sea-
son, whicheveroccursfirst.
innerpapercartridge - clean or replace
every 100 operating hours or every sea-
son, whicheveroccursfirst.
To ServiceAir Cleaner(Figure5-3):
1. Stopengine, waitfor partsto stop
moving,and disconnect s parkplug
wire.
2. Unscrewmounting screws and/or re-
move knobs (D). Removecovers (E).
Removepapercartridge (B) and foam
pre-cleaner(A). Separatefoam pre-
cleanerfrom papercartridge.
3. Wash foam pre-cleaner(A) in liquid

detergentand warm water. Squeezedry
in a cleancloth.
4. Saturatefoam pre-cleanerin clean
engineoil. Wrap in clean,absorbent
cloth and squeeze to removeall excess
oil.
5. Replacepapercartridge (B), if
necessary.
6. Reassemble air cleanercomponents.
Tighten knobs/screws(D) securely.
Securecover assembly (E) on air
cleanerbody.
SPARKPLUG
Inspect the spark plug (Figure5-4) after
every 100 hoursof operation. Be sure
the gap is set at .030".Do not reuseplug
if it is severelyworn or damaged.
Best resultsare obtainedwith a new
plug. See EngineOwner'sManualto de-
termine proper replacementplug. Use
of incorrect plug can causeengine dam-
age.
NOTE:Do not cleanspark plug in ma-
chines which useabrasivegrit. Clean
spark plug by scraping or wire brushing,
or washing with a commercialsolvent.

Charge battery only with charger sup-
plied with machine. Do not shortcircuit
battery wires. Removeany jewelry be-
fore workingon or near the battery or
electric startsystem. Failureto follow
these instructionscould result in per-
sonal injuryor property damage.
BATTERY(if applicable)
Chargebatteryif unit is to be stored for
longer than threeweeks. Duringthe
mowing season,the battery is kept
chargedby the chargingsystem on the
engine.
To ChargeBattery:
1. Plug chargerconnector into wire har-
nessconnector located belowignition
switch in handlebarconsole.
2. Plugchargerinto 120Vwall outlet.
(Notethat batterychargeris designedfor
useindoorsand shouldnot beexposedto
rainor snow.)
3. Chargebatteryfor 24-48 hours if unit
is to be stored for longer than three
weeks.
4. After charging, unplug chargerfrom
outlet, then unplug chargerfrom con-
nector on wire harnesslocatedbelow
handlebarconsole.
CARBURETOR
Thecarburetor is adjustedat the factory.
It should not needto be reset. If black
exhaustis noted, checkthe air cleaner
first. An over-rich mixture is usually
caused by a poorly servicedor clogged
air cleanerelement,not an improperly
adjusted carburetor. If readjustmentis
necessary,refer to EngineOwner's
Manualor contactyour engine dealer.
