Primary File Server
When To Define A Primary File Server
The procedure for defining a primary file server starts on the next page. A
primary file server should be defined only if you have a very large network
tied into many different sites with several file servers. This procedure is
performed with the PCONSOLE utility in the File Servers To Be Serviced
option, details of which start on the next page.
If you do not wish to define a primary file server, go directly to the
PCONSOLE configuration procedure for your particular NetWare version.
The following information describes the effect on your system when a
primary file server is defined and not defined.
When a primary file server is defined -
•
File servers require no more than a 1/4 second propagation delay.
•
Minimum of two file servers can be placed on the file server list.
•
The NC-2 searches for the primary server, starting with the
servers that are closest (0 hops), and works its way outward to a
maximum of four hops.
When the NC-2 finds a primary file server, the print server -
•
Stops searching for other servers
•
Reads the list of servers in NetWare's PCONSOLE
•
Attempts to attach to every server on the list, wherever located.
When a primary file server is not defined -
•
File servers require no more that a 1/4 second propagation delay
•
The NC-2 has a maximum limit of 16 file servers
•
The NC-2 searches for file servers that are four hops or less
away. The four hops that NC-2 searches are the four LAN
segments directly connected to the first workstation or server.
NOTES:
1. The propagation delay is the time it takes for a packet of data to go from the file
server to the NC-2 unit.
2. A hop is a step in the data transmission from one node (a workstation or server)
through an intermediate node.
