ActiveX
ActiveX is a set of technologies from Microsoft that enables
interactive content for the World Wide Web. As ActiveX security
settings in Internet Explorer can allow web pages to secretly install
ActiveX controls automatically, they can be a significant security
threat. ActiveX controls can access files on your hard drive.
adware
Adware is spyware software that gathers information about you and
sends it to an advertiser in order to display advertisements while you
browse the Internet. Usually adware tracks your web browsing
behavior and sends it to third parties without your authorization or
knowledge.
Alert
A message generated by an F-Secure product if there has been a
problem with a program or with an operation. Alerts are also
generated when a virus is found. The administrator and the user can
define which alerts are generated, either by defining firewall rules or
enabling or disabling specific alerts. Alerts can be generated by the
acceptance or denial of a specific network packet, by packets with
illegal flags, too short fragments or illegal fragmentation.
Application
A software program written for a specific purpose. Applications
normally need to be manually launched.
Application Control
Application Control is a feature of F-Secure Internet Shield that
automatically checks an application connecting from your computer
to the Internet by comparing the application with lists of safe
(pre-approved) software and known malicious software (Trojans etc.).
Authentication
The act of proving one's identity.
