10.2 Setup

10.2.1 Overview of Setup

The RAID controller of this equipment lets the equipment recognize two connected drives as a
single drive. In addition, RAID1 and other processing are performed by the RAID controller
itself. Therefore, you do not need BIOS (which is used to control the RAID controller from the
equipment) or a device driver (which is used to control the RAID controller from OS). The
equipment recognizes the drives as a normal SATA drive, so you do not need to install special
software during setup.

10.2.2 Setting Up a New RAID1

● When a new RAID1 system is built, RAID1 configuration information corresponding
to only one unit of the equipment being used is recorded on the drives. Drives on
which the configuration information is recorded cannot be used with other
equipment. For this reason, if you use multiple units of the equipment, carefully
handle and store drives so that they are not inadvertently swapped. If drives are
swapped, the RAID 1 configuration information might become inconsistent, the
equipment might not operate correctly, or data on the drive might be lost.
● If you are building a RAID1 system from scratch, prepare two new drives of the
models specified and tested by Hitachi. If you use a different model, data stored on
the drives might be lost.
To build a new RAID1 system on the equipment, perform the following procedure.
Note that a RAID1 system is already built at the time of shipping, so you do not need to
perform this procedure.
1. Prepare two new drives.
2. Shut down the OS, and then disconnect the equipment's power cord from the outlet. Wait at
least one minute, and then install the new drives in drive bay 1 and drive bay 2. (See "6.3.6
Installing and removing an HDD or SSD".)
3. Connect the power cord to the outlet and then turn on the equipment. The RAID controller
automatically detects the new drives and writes the RAID1 configuration information to both
drives.
4. Install the OS by using the recovery DVD. (See "CHAPTER 7 RESTORING THE
FACTORY-SHIPPED CONDITION USING A RECOVERY DVD".)
