• The media converter only establishes one Gigabit Ethernet link via autonegotiation.

Network topologies

You can build the following topologies with the SCALANCE XCM-100 series media converters:
• Line
• Star
• Ring (with series connection)
• Standby coupling (with series connection)
Note
Adhere to the maximum permissible cable lengths for the respective devices. You can find
information about the maximum cable length in the section "Cable lengths (Page 57)".

The following example shows a line topology.

In this example, a SCALANCE XC208
XC208 has only Fast Ethernet ports. Therefore, the media converter that is connected to
the SCALANCE XC208 can only work in Fast Ethernet mode. An SFP transceiver of the
type SFP991-1* must be inserted in each case between the media converter
