144 Driving and parking
For the automatic functions to work correctly, the
driver must be seated in the correct seat position
(
page 72).

The function of the electric parking brake is
dependent on the on-board electrical system volt‐
age. If the on-board electrical system voltage is
low or there is a malfunction in the system, it
may not be possible to apply the electric parking
brake and the yellow ! indicator lamp lights
up.
In this case, park the vehicle in the following way:
Park the vehicle on level ground and secure it
R
to prevent it from rolling away.
Shift the transmission to position j.
R

The electric parking brake is only actually
applied when the red ! indicator lamp
lights up continuously.
It may not be possible to release a parking brake
if the on-board electrical system voltage is low or
if there is a malfunction in the system. The yel‐
low ! indicator lamp and the red ! indica‐
tor lamp light up. Inform a qualified specialist
workshop.
Automatically applying the electric parking
brake
When you remove the key from the ignition lock
when the vehicle is stationary, the parking brake
is applied automatically.
The red ! indicator lamp in the multifunction
display lights up. The electric parking brake is
only actually applied when the red ! indicator
lamp lights up continuously.
Releasing the electric parking brake automat‐
ically
The electric parking brake of your vehicle is
released when all of the following conditions are
fulfilled:
the co-driver seat is occupied
R
the seat belt tongue of the seat belt is inser‐
R
ted into the driver's seat belt buckle
the drive system has been started
R
you shift the transmission to position h or
R
k
Applying/releasing the electric parking brake

& WARNING Risk of accident and injury
due to children left unattended in the
vehicle
If children are left unsupervised in the vehi‐
cle, they could, in particular:
open doors, thereby endangering other
R
persons or road users.
get out and be struck by oncoming traffic.
R
operate vehicle equipment and become
R
trapped, for example.
In addition, the children could also set the
vehicle in motion, for example by:
releasing the parking brake.
R
changing the transmission position.
R
starting the vehicle.
R
Never leave children unattended in the
#
vehicle.
When leaving the vehicle, always take
#
the key with you and lock the vehicle.
Keep the vehicle key out of reach of
#
children.
If you apply and release the parking brake fre‐
quently within a short period, it may not be possi‐
ble to release the parking brake again in some
cases. To protect it from damage, the parking
brake is temporarily locked and cannot be
released – repeat lock. The parking brake is
operational again after approximately 20 sec‐
onds.
