CAN VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS
Description
The Controller Area Network (CAN) is only available on vehicles equipped with the Automated Manual Transaxle
(AMT). CAN vehicle communication is a multiplex communication system. This enables the system to transmit and
receive large quantities of data at high speed by connecting various vehicle modules with two communication lines
(CAN-H and CAN-L). CAN vehicle communication consists of the following:
• Diagnostic Connector
• Instrument Cluster
• Automated Manual Transaxle (AMT) Control Module
Operation
Control modules on the Controller Area Network (CAN) network transmit signals using the CAN communication con-
trol circuit. Data exchange between modules is achieved by serial transmission of encoded data over the CAN net-
work. The CAN data bus messages are carried over the bus in the form of variable pulse width modulated signals.
The CAN bus uses low and high voltage levels to generate signals. The voltage on the bus varies between zero and
two and one-half volts. The low and high voltage levels are generated by means of variable-pulse width modulation
to form signals of varying length.
