Solving Screen Problems

This section lists some common causes and solutions for computer
display and external monitor problems
You can perform a monitor self-test on an external VGA color or
monochrome monitor by disconnecting the monitor from the
computer. To do so, complete the following steps:
1. Switch to the internal display.
2. Turn off the external monitor.
3. Disconnect the external monitor signal cable from the
computer.
4. Turn on the monitor and allow it to warm up for one minute.
The screen should be white. A narrow black border may
also appear on the left and right sides of the display. Either of
these displays indicates that the monitor is working properly.
Problem
Characters are dim.
Screen is blank.
Possible Cause
Brightness is not
properly set.
Computer screen is in
direct light.
The Brightness setting
may be less than you
prefer.
Screen save was
initiated after the
screen timeout (period
of inactivity).
You initiated
QuickLock/
QuickBlank.
Brightness needs
adjusting.
Solution
Press Fn+F10, then press
the right arrow key to
increase brightness.
Tilt the display or move
the computer.
Verify or change setting
for Brightness on the
Battery Conservation
Settings tab in Power
Properties (see
Chapter 4.)
Press any key or click
the mouse.
Enter your power-on
password to exit
QuickLock/QuickBlank.
NOTE: If num lock is on,
hold down the Fn key to
type a non-numeric
password; press Fn+Shift
for uppercase.
Press Fn+F10 then the
right arrow key to
increase brightness.
