Solving Diskette and Diskette Drive Problems
Problem
Diskette drive
cannot write to a
diskette.

Possible Cause
Diskette has a bad
sector.
Drive error has
occurred.
Diskette is not
formatted.
Diskette is defective
or damaged.
Drive error has
occurred.
Bootable diskette is
not in computer
MultiBay or is not first
diskette in the
MultiBoot order.
Diskette boot ability is
disabled in Computer
Setup.

Solution
Copy files to hard drive
or another diskette.
Reformat the bad
diskette.
In Windows 95, click the
Device Manager tab in
System Properties to
verify the diskette drive is
recognized and to view
settings.
Run Computer Checkup
to test the drive (see
Chapter 16).
Format the diskette.
If you can read other
diskettes in the drive, try
reading this diskette in
another diskette drive to
verify whether it is
damaged.
In Explorer, click the
drive letterÆFileÆ
PropertiesÆError
CheckingÆCheck Now
button.
Run Computer Checkup
to test the drive (see
Chapter 16).
Verify the diskette has the
system files necessary to
boot.
Run Computer Setup
and verify the MultiBoot
order under Boot
Management (see
"Changing the Drive Boot
Order" in Chapter 6 and
Computer Setup in
Chapter 16).
Run Computer Setup
and enable Diskette Boot
Ability under Boot
Management.
