Solving Battery and Battery Gauge Problems
Problem
Computer shut down
and information in
memory was lost
when a battery pack
was being replaced.
Unsaved data was
lost when system did
not initiate
Hibernation on
critical low-battery
condition.
Battery charge does
not last as long as
expected.
17-6 Troubleshooting
Possible Cause
Suspend was not
initiated, or a charged
battery pack was not
inserted quickly
enough after remov-
ing the discharged
battery pack.
Auxiliary battery
charge is low because
the computer was not
connected to a power
source for an
extended period of
time.
Auxiliary battery is at
the end of its life.
Hibernation has been
turned off.
Hard drive does not
have enough free
space to save the
Hibernation file.
The battery conserva-
tion level is set to
None (Drain.
An external device or
a PC Card is draining
the battery pack.
Battery pack
discharged while left
in an unplugged
computer for an
extended time.
Continued
Solution
To prevent loss of
information next time,
initiate Suspend, remove
the discharged battery
pack, and immediately
insert a fully charged
battery pack.
Connect the computer to
an external power source
for approximately 24
hours to fully charge the
auxiliary battery.
Contact your Compaq
authorized service
provider to replace the
auxiliary battery.
Enable Hibernation on
the Hibernation tab in
Power Properties.
On the Hibernation tab in
Power Properties, verify
the drive and amount of
space required for the
Hibernation file. Free at
least that amount of
space on the drive.
Press Fn+F7 or open
Power Properties to
change the battery
conservation level.
Turn off or remove
external devices and
PC Cards when not
using them.
If the computer will be
disconnected from
external power for more
than two weeks, remove
the battery pack.
