The
distributors
ore

The vocuum
control unit
is
mounted
sepqrotely
on the
outside
of
the
dis-
tributor
housing.
The vocuum
control unit
consists
of
on
enclosed
spring-looded
diophrogm
linked
mechonico
lly to the
distributor.
The
oirtight
side
of
the
diophrognn
is
connected
to the
intoke
monlfold
side
of
the
corburetor.
Under
port
throttle
operotion,
the intoke
monifold
vocu-
um is
sufficient
to
octuote
the
dio-
phrognr
ond
couse
the
distrlbutor
to
rotote
in
its
mount, thus
odvoncing
the
spork
ond
increosing
fuel
economy.
During
occelerotion
or
when
the
en-
gine is pulling
heovily,
the
vocuum
is
not
sufficient
to
octuote the
diophrogm
ond
the
distributcr
is held
in the
re-
torded
position
by
o
colibroted
return
spring which
beors
ogoinst
the
vocu-
um diophrogm.
The
centrifugol
odvonce
mechonism
consists
of
on
outomotic com
octuoted
by two
centrifugol
weights
controlled
by
springs.
As the speed
of
the
dis-
tributor shoft
increoses
with
engine
speed,
the
weights
ore
thrown
out-
word
ogoinst
the pull of the
springs.
This
odvonces
the
corn cousing
the
contoct points
to
open eorlier
ond
thus odvoncing
the
spork.
The distributor
cop
should
be
re-
moved
ond wiped cleon with
o
dry
rog.A
visuol inspection should
be
mode
for
crocks,
corbon
runners, ond
corroded high
tension terminols.
lf
ony
of
these
conditions
ore
found,
the
cop
shou
ld
be
reploced.
ln
replocing
the
cop, be
sure
thot the high
tension
wires
ore
instolled
in the
some
towers
f
rom which they
were
removed
ond
thof they
ore
pushed
firmly down
in
ploce.
lf
the
inserts inside
the cop
CIre
ex-
cessively
burned,
the cop
should
be
reploced.
However,
the
verticol
f
oce
of
the
insert
wil
I
show
sonne evidence
of
burning through normol
operotion.
The
inserts
should
olso
be
checked
for
evidence
of
mechonicol
interference
with the rotor
tip.
The rotor should
be
visuolly
in-
spected
for
crocks, evidence
of
burn-
ing on the
top of the
metol strip,
or
evidence
of
mecho
nicol
interference
with
the cop.

Condenser
Tests
The
purpcse
of
the
condenser
in
the
ignition
system is
to
prevent
orcing
ond
pitting
ot
the breoker
points
ond
to
oid
in
collopsing
the
mCIgnetic
{leld
of
the
ignition
coil. ln
order
to
function
prop-
erly ond to
ossure
good ignition,
the
condenser must
hove
three
importont
cho
rocteristics.

One
of the
most importont
items
to
check is
the breoker
lever
spring
ten-
sion. This
is
checked
with
o
spring
scole hooked
immediotely
behind
the
breo
ker
lever contoct. Spring
tension
required
to
open
the
contoct
points
shou
ld be

The
breoker
lever
on
new set
wil'l
