2.2 Functional description

SOMNOvent ST operates according to the
principle of an electrically driven flow genera-
tor with one or two pressure levels that are
controlled electronically.
A radial compressor draws in ambient
air through a filter
the unit outlet

through the tube system
to the patient.

A pressure sensor measures the pressure
present in the mask
tem
. A flow sensor detects inspiration
12
and expiration from the fluctuations in the
air stream. The microprocessor-controlled
flow generator changes the pressure to
the set IPAP and EPAP values.
The SOMNOvent ST can be operated in
four different therapy modes:
CPAP, bilevel S, bilevel ST and bilevel
T modes
In the time-controlled T and ST modes,
respiratory frequency can be set in the
range from 5 to 45 breaths a minute and
inspiration time in the range from 25 %
to 67 % of the respiratory period.
In assisted modes S and ST, the trigger
threshold can be adapted on 5 levels
separately for inspiration and expiration
to suit individual requirements.
SOMNOvent ST determines the right trig-
ger time from the fluctuations in the air
stream in the unit. Here it also adjusts to
changes in depths of respiration within
one trigger threshold as they occur for
example in different sleep phases. If the
unit is used for a lengthy period with the
mask open, a very high air flow will result.
