The term "automation systems" which is used in the following section covers
controllers as well as their components (modules), other elements (e.g. mounting
racks, connecting cable), operating devices and software used for the
programming, commissioning and operation of controllers. This operating manual
can only describe part of the automation system (e.g. modules).
The technical design of Wieland automation systems is based on the product
standard EN 61131-2 (IEC 61131-2) for programmable controllers. The CE mark
applies in principle to the systems and devices in accordance with the EMC
guideline 89/336/EEC and the low voltage guideline 73/23/EEC where applicable.
The machine guideline 89/392/EEC does not come into effect as the protection
measures outlined in the guideline are also covered by the low voltage and EMC
guidelines. If the Wieland automation systems form part of the electrical
equipment of a machine, they must be included by the machine manufacturer in
the process for conformity assessment. The norm DIN EN 60204-1 should be
noted (machine safety, general requirements for the electrical equipment of
machines).
During proper usage and maintenance of the automation systems, there is
normally no risk of damage to property or health. Danger can however arise in the
case of connected controlling elements such as motors, hydraulic units etc. if the
project design, installation, maintenance and operation of the entire installation or
machine is not carried out properly in accordance with the instructions in this
manual or by staff with sufficient training.
5.1

Conditions for use

The automation systems are assembled according to the latest technology and
recognised safety-related guidelines. During their usage however, risk of injury to
the user or a third party or damage to machines, installations or other property may
occur.
The automation system should only be used in a technically correct condition with
awareness of the safety and risk factors and under consideration of the operating
instructions. The error-free and safe operation of the controllers requires proper
transport, storage and installation as well as careful operation and maintenance.
Faults which could influence the safety aspects must be rectified immediately.
The automation systems are only intended for the control of machines and
installations. They may not be used for any other purpose. The manufacturer is not
responsible for any damages that may arise.
The instructions described in this manual regarding the mechanical and electrical
installation, commissioning and operation should be noted to ensure the proper
usage of the automation systems.
5.2

Staff selection and qualification

All project design, programming, installation, commissioning, operating and maintenance tasks in
connection with the automation system may only be carried out by trained personnel (e.g.
electrical engineers and installers).
The project design and programming personnel must be familiar with the safety concepts of
