Arrange to the heat exchanger outlet pipe a
system allowing visual verification of the ef-
fective and proper circulation of water (e.g. ex-
posed drain).
The heat exchanger outlet must be disposed
close to the diesel pump.
Neither reduce nor block the outlet of the heat
exchanger and avoid long and tortuous routes
that can restrict the water passage. Do not in-
sert any component on the outlet pipe (gate
valve or other) that can affect the correct cool-
ing water circulation.
Do regular filter cleaning and check for proper
water circulation in the cooling system.
Never bring the engine to run at lower speeds
then nominal.
A low speed rotation may cause a not sufficient
cooling flow of water through the heat exchang-
er and a possible engine damage due to over-
heating.
The heat exchanger cooling system has the following parts:
• a water/water exchanger with expansion tank;
• a manometer with indication of the operational area at the
inlet of the expansion tank;
• a circuit consisting of filter, valve with hydraulic control and a
pressure regulator;
• a bypass circuit with gate valve.
The heat exchanger circuit is connected to the pump discharge
just before the check valve and with a pipe of appropriate size.
During pump operation, a part of the flow of the pumping set
circulates through the heat exchanger so to provide the cooling
of the diesel engine.
This flow does not contribute to supplying the fire-fighting
system and must be considered in the hydraulic calculation and
when choosing the pumping set.
For values of minimum flow required that must pass through
the heat exchanger to refer to the performance curves of the
pumping set.

Most of the heat is dissipated by the cooling system just
described. Despite this, the engine, running, free in the environ-
ment a certain amount of energy in the form of heat. Therefore
it is necessary to realize ventilation openings sized in order to
maintain in the room the desired temperature.
The following drawing shows a possible solution.
9.5
Diesel tank with collection basin and connec-
tion for the vent pipe
The diesel pumps are equipped with fuel tank complete with a
collection basin of a capacity equal to 100% of the geometric
capacity of the tank itself.
This device prevents diesel from leaking in the case the main
tank breaks or leaks.
As can be seen from the drawing below, a sight glass on the
side of the basin (ref.A), allows with a simple visual check, to
verify the integrity of the tank.
The diesel pump tank is also supplied with a connection for the
vent pipe (rif.B) to be carried out of the installation room.
9.6

Combustion gas outlet (diesel pumps).

The exhaust gas duct and the muffler must be
insulated and protected with suitable materials
to ensure that:
- they do not irradiate heat in the installation
room,
- temperatures dangerous for people are not
reached on the external surface in case of ac-
cidental contact.
