connected to the WX port. The WX 10/100 port provides PoE to the MAP.
The WX forwards data only to and from the configured MAP on that
port.
Distributed MAP Network Requirements When a MAP connects
indirectly to a WX, the WX must be configured with a Distributed MAP
configuration. The WX can communicate with the Distributed MAP
through any network port. (In the CLI, a Distributed MAP configuration is
referred to as a DAP.)
Because distributed MAPs are not directly attached to a WX, they require
additional support from the network in order to function. Information on
the booting and operation sequence for Distributed MAPs is covered in
the "Configuring MAP Access Points" chapter of the
and Controller Configuration
Power—PoE must be provided on one of the Ethernet connections to
the MAP. Be sure to utilize a PoE injection device that has been tested
by 3Com. Providing PoE on both of the Ethernet connections (if the
MAP has two) allows for redundant PoE.
DHCP—A Distributed MAP uses TCP/IP for communication, and relies
on DHCP to obtain IP parameters. Therefore, DHCP services must be
available on the subnet that the MAP is connected to. DHCP must
provide the following parameters to the MAP:
IP address
Domain name
DNS server address
Gateway address
DNS—If the intermediate network between the WX switch and
Distributed MAP includes one or more IP routers, create a
3COMWX.mynetwork.com entry on the DNS server. The DNS entry
allows the MAP to communicate with a WX. If the MAP is unable to
locate a WX on the subnet it is connected to, it performs a DNS query
for 3COMWX.mynetwork.com, where the DNS suffix for
mynetwork.com is learned through DHCP. The WX relays information
about WX switches in the network that contain a Distributed MAP
configuration specific to that Distributed MAP.
