Configuring MAPs for
Wireless Users
A directly connected MAP connects to one or two 10/100 ports on
a WX. The WX 10/100 port provides PoE to the MAP. The WX
forwards data only to and from the configured MAP on that port.
The port numbers on the WX configured for direct attached MAPs
reference a particular MAP.
A MAP that is not directly connected to a WX is considered a
Distributed MAP. The WX contains a configuration for a Distributed
MAP based on the MAP's serial number. Similar to ports configured
for directly connected MAPs, Distributed MAP configurations are
numbered and can reference a particular MAP. These numbered
configurations do not, however, reference any physical port.
A Distributed MAP is a leaf device. You do not need to enable STP on the
port that is directly connected to the MAP. If Spanning Tree Protocol (STP)
is enabled on the port that is directly connected to a Distributed MAP,
3Com recommends that you enable port fast convergence (called
PortFast on some vendors' devices) on the port or disable STP on the
port. (For more information, see the "Configuring MAP Access Points"
chapter in the
Wireless LAN Switch and Controller Configuration
A wired authentication user connects to the WX by a network cable. The
user must authenticate before connecting to the network. To set a port
type for a wired authentication user, use the following command:
set port type wired-auth port-list [tag tag-list]
[max-sessions num]
The following example sets port 3 for a wired authentication user:
WX1200# set port type wired-auth 3
success: change accepted
A wireless user makes a wireless connection through a MAP to the WX.
The user must authenticate before connecting to the network. To allow
wireless users, you must configure the WX to support a MAP. To prepare a
MAP access point for use, perform the following tasks, in this order:
1 Configure the WX switch for the MAP access it will be supporting and
enable Power over Ethernet (PoE) if required. (See "Configuring for a
Configuring for Authenticating Users
61
Guide.)
