2. Plug the RJ-45-to-DB-9 serial port adapter into the serial port on your personal computer
(Figure
47). Connect the other end of the Ethernet rollover cable to the console port on the
router

3. Turn on the power to the personal computer. Start Microsoft Windows Hyperterminal or
another asynchronous terminal emulation application. Select the appropriate COM port to
use, such as COM1.
4. Configure the port settings as follows:
Bits per second: 9600
Data bits: 8
Parity: none
Stop bits: 1
Flow control: none

Rebooting the router and changing the root password

1. Press the power button to turn off the router.
2. Press the power button again to turn on the router, and watch carefully as the system
begins to boot up.
The boot loader displays the boot loading script, and briefly stops booting at the following
prompt:
3. Press the spacebar immediately.
The ok prompt appears.
4. Enter boot -s.
The system performs a single-user boot-up process and displays the following prompt:
5. Enter recovery.
The system finishes booting and displays instructions to set a new root password and the
CLI (>) prompt.
