DISTANCE MEASURING
EQUIPMENT
The distance measuring equipment consists of
two independent systems. The DME systems
measure the slant range distance between the
aircraft and a tuned DME ground station to a
maximum of 300 nautical miles. The DME
systems provide distance input data to the
navigation computers to calculate ground-
speed, time to station, and ground station iden-
tification. The navigation computers provide
DME data outputs to the EHSIs (Figure 16-14),
DAFCS, FMS, and audio integrating systems.

The VHF control unit automatically selects a
DME channel if the navaid contains a paired
DME frequency. The VHF control unit pro-
vides manual frequency selection, and the
FMS provides automatic frequency selection.
The DME consists of two transmitter/receivers
and two antennas. The transmitter/receiver
transmits in the 1025 to 1150 MHz and re-
ceives in the 962 to 1213 MHz. The reception
frequency band is designated as x and y chan-
nels from 1 to 126. The transmitter/receiver re-
quires no warmup and provides a fast lock-on
with ground station signals.
