There are two types of airborne navigation
systems: dependent position-determining sys-
tems (DPDS), which require ground trans-
m i t t e r s f o r o p e r a t i o n , a n d i n d e p e n d e n t
position-determining systems (IPDS), which
operate independently of ground equipment.
The basic DPDS on the Challenger include
VHF navigation (VOR and ILS), marker bea-
con, automatic direction finder (ADF), dis-
tance-measuring equipment (DME), and
ATC transponders. The IPDS consist of a
weather radar, radio altimeter, and inertial
reference systems.
