MAIN LANDING GEAR
BAY OVERHEAT
DETECTION
Main landing gear (MLG) bay overheat de-
tection (Figure 8-9) provides a cockpit indi-
cation of an overheat in either main landing
gear bay. This condition may result from an
overheated brake assembly.
The system consists of:
• Two sensing loops
• The MLG bay overheat detection unit
• The red MLG BAY OVHT switchlight
• The amber MLG BAY OVHT WARN
FAIL switchlight

One detection loop is attached to the top of
each main wheel well bin. The OVHT and
OVHT WARN FAIL switchlights are located
below the landing gear control panel.
OPERATION
The detection loops are similar to those of the
engine and APU fire detection systems. They
are connected in series (Figure 8-10) and will
give a cockpit warning when they detect a
temperature in excess of 320°F (160°C).
When the temperature exceeds this trip level,
the overheat detection unit illuminates the red
OVHT light on the center instrument panel.
Since the cause of this overheat condition is
usually high brake temperature, the flight
crew would extend the gear to cool the brakes
in accordance with AFM procedures. When the
