c. Install one end of the medium radius rod to
the inside of the disc adjust frame using the
same bolt that the long radius rod is on. Install
the other end of the medium radius rod to the
outside of the left front disc frame arm with a
1" x 4-1/2" cap screw and nut.
3-9.6
Retract the disc adjust cylinder com-
pletely. Adjust the radius rods to raise the
disc gangs to maximum height. (The disc
gang frame tubes should be 1/8" from the
main frame brackets.) Adjust left and right
disc gangs to the same height.

3-10 SPRING SHANK INSTALLATION

IMPORTANT
READ ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AT THE
FRONT OF THIS SECTION BEFORE ATTEMPT-
ING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES.
IMPORTANT
SEE FIGURE 3-12 FOR PART NAMES. SEE FIG-
URES 2-1 THROUGH 2-12 FOR SHANK SPAC-
ING.
3-10.1
When installing shanks, start measuring
shank locations from the center of the ma-
chine then measure shank locations outward
on the frame as needed. When applicable,
install the center shank first. Install it at the
center of the frame assembly on the correct
mounting tube. All other shanks are evenly
spaced relative to the center shank, using
24" or 30" spacing (not both). Install the
outer-most shanks last.
3-10.2
Assemble the spring mount bracket to
the frame bars using the clamp u-bolts,
washers, and locking nuts, as follows:
a. Install the spring clamp bracket and the u-
bolts.
b. Tighten the bottom of the u-bolt until the
front of the U-bolts are tight against the frame.
c. Tighten the upper half of the u-bolt to Grade
5 torque (See Table 2-1).
CAUTION
TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE MA-
CHINE NEVER ADJUST THE RADIUS
RODS TO RAISE THE DISC GANGS
HIGHER THAN THE ADJUSTMENT IN
SECTION 3-9.6.
3-9.7
To operate the front and rear disc
gangs at different depths, adjust the front
disc gangs lower by shortening the front disc
radius rods. Front gangs should be set to run
1" to 2" lower than rear discs.
3-9.8
Assemble the depth gauge to the main
frame using a u-bolt and nuts. Position the
gauge under the pointer on the disc adjust
frame.
3-10.3
Install the spikes on the shanks using
the roll pin provided. If installing wear
guards, slide clamp onto shank before in-
stalling spike. Seat spike on shank. Then in-
stall wearguard into slot in spike and clamp
in place with wearguard clamp without un-
seating spike.
3-10.4
Attach the shanks to the spring clamp
brackets with the hollow bolts, bushings, cap
screw and locking nut. Tighten the hollow
bolt to 1200 foot-pounds of torque and the
cap screw to 200 foot-pounds of torque.
Grease the hollow bolt.
IMPORTANT
FIGURE 4-3 GIVES AN EXAMPLE OF TORQUE.
3-10.5
Mount the rear spring anchor plates and
stop bracket to the shanks using cap screws
and locking nuts. The bottom edge of stop
bracket should be just above the wear guard
clamp. Leave cap screws loose at this time.
3-10.6
Install the coil spring assembly between
the spring clamp bracket and the rear spring
anchor plates as shown in Figure 3-12. Se-
cure with cap screws and locking nuts.
IMPORTANT
DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN BOLTS AS THE
SPRINGS MUST BE FREE TO PIVOT.
3-10.7
Tighten cap screws in rear spring an-
chor plates referred to in Section 3-10.5.
3-10.8
Adjustment holes are provided at the
top of the spring clamp bracket to compen-
sate for varying ground conditions.
