17. Defects and causes thereof
Defect characteristic
Multi start -or cut badly threads
The thread turns are cut off completely
The chasers have been inserted in the
right order and direction. Even so a two-
start thread is cut.
The threads are cut badly or bear score
marks along the thread flank.
Thread is getting conical.
Chaser is conical and excentric to the
clamping diameter.
Non- circular cut thread
Clattered thread.
Causes and remedies
When mounting the order of the threads
1-2-3-4 has been disregarded.
The chasers have been inserted in the
right order, but in the wrong direction.
Please note:
right-handed threads: clockwise
left-handed threads: anti-clockwise
The infeed speed is too fast while pres-
sing on.
Chaser or chaser holders from different
sets have been used!
Please check the set number!
Chaser for conical threads have been
used – Please check the marking!
Chasers set too far over centre.
Chasers haven't been grinded properly
(the radius in the nook between cutting
sprocket and guide sprocket is too big)
resp. the gap between cutting sprocket
and guide sprocket hasn't been grinded
properly.
One or more chasers are tilted – check
clamping plate and if chasers are fit-
ted properly!
Cutting head and workpiece are off cen-
tred.
Chasers are set irregularly.
Cutting speed is too high.
Workpiece is clamped too far.
Chip angle is too big.
