Spectra Logic preliminarily recommends cleaning the drives with approved Sony
cleaning media after every 100 hours of use. However, since customer
environments do vary widely, 100 hours may be too often for some environments,
and not enough for others.
•If your drives show indications (for instance, read or write failures) that they need to
be cleaned before they have reached 100 hours of use, cut the drive cleaning time
in half, and monitor your environment closely. Continue cutting the drive cleaning
time in half until an appropriate time between cleanings has been reached for your
environment. Conversely, if you have a very clean operating environment, double
your time between cleanings to 200 hours, and continue doubling the time between
cleanings until an appropriate cleaning cycle has been reached for your
environment.
•Usually, these cleanings can be scheduled to take place automatically through your
backup software package. Please refer to your backup application user manual or
your vendor for instructions on how to set up scheduled automatic drive head
cleanings. If your software package does not have features that allow for scheduled
drive head cleanings, you can clean the drive heads manually.
