4. Troubleshooting Information
It is the responsibility of your clinician to inform you
about risks and benefits of prosthetic voice rehabilitation
and to instruct you what to do in case you may encounter
adverse events.
• Symptom: Speaking is sometimes not possible (valve
does not open).
Probable cause: The valve lid sticks to the valve seat,
preventing the valve from opening. This becomes
more likely the longer the valve has not been in use
(e.g. overnight).
What to do: Clean the prosthesis and lubricate it (see
section Cleaning and Maintenance). If cleaning and
lubricating does not help: Contact your clinician.
• Symptom: Coughing (triggered by drinking or eating)
while the prosthesis is in place.
Probable cause: Leakage through or around the
valve.
What to do: Clean the prosthesis. There may be food
remnants preventing the valve from proper closure.
If cleaning does not help: You can close the prosthesis
with a Provox Plug. If the leakage stops, the prosthesis
needs to be replaced. Contact your clinician to have
the prosthesis replaced. While eating and drinking
you can use a Provox Plug to prevent leakage.
If the problem persists, even with the Provox Plug
in place: You may have some leakage around the
prosthesis. Contact your clinician.
• Symptom: Speaking becomes increasingly difficult.
Probable cause: Valve obstruction, tissue swelling
in the throat.
What to do: Clean the prosthesis. There may be food
remnants increasing airflow resistance.
If that does not help: Contact your clinician.
• Symptoms: Pain, heat, swelling, and rash (together
or alone) in the area of the puncture.
Probable cause: Tissue inflammation or infection
What to do: Contact your clinician immediately.

• Symptom: Coughing, prosthesis is missing
Probable cause: Accidental swallowing or accidental
aspiration of the prosthesis.
What to do: Seek immediate medical treatment!
• Symptoms: Traces of blood are seen on the Brush
after brushing.
Probable cause: Tissue inflammation and infections
at the esophageal side.
What to do: Contact your clinician immediately.
